Plants for Acidic Soil
Water from the heavy rainfall in Kenya passing through the soil affects the pH of the soil by leaching out magnesium and calcium. These basic nutrients are replaced with aluminum and iron causing the soil to be more acidic. Application of the fertilizers we use contain manure, high in ammonium and urea, which speeds up the rate at which acidity develops. Decomposition of organic matter from mulch piles also adds to the soil acidity.

David has been researching plants that will grow in acidic soil. He has planted wheat and sorghum along the fence. These grain-producing crops are doing well in acidic soil.

Field of Amazing Maize

Maize (corn) is a common crop grown in Kenya. The members of the community are learning aspects of crop farming as opposed to the small plot gardening that was taught previously on the farm. Small plot farming provides food for the household and some for trade. Crop farming is another way of using their resources that has potential for cash profit.

David Kipkorir is experimenting with a hybrid seed that promises a very healthy maize (Hybrid 627). The maize is doing very well.

Interspersed among the corn, David has planted beans. This is known as inter cropping. The center is implementing and demonstrating some of some techniques learned from a book called, "Growing Bio Intensive" by Jon Jeavons that was donated to them last year.

purity runs to get out of the rain

David's wife and daughter, Purity and Petreace plant kale, cabbage and sukuma wiki, an African leafy vegetable in the vegetable garden. People come to visit the farm and learn how to implement the same technology in their own gardens. David's wife Purity is walking fast to get out of the rain which is about to fall. The rainy season started in March. In June and July the heavy rains will slow down to a drizzle. Then August and September the rains will continue until finally in October the dry season begins.

Potatoes
The plants you see with the beautiful white flowers are potatoes. David reports that these plants are doing the best on the farm right now. Potatoes do well in the acidic soil.

The potatoes are planted on mounds in Kenya to prevent them from becoming submerged during the heavy rains. Purity and the younger children, Mercy, Faith and Winnie, help weed the potatoes after school.

Wish List/Prayer Requests In Kenya - Praises for the electricity and water lines that the government have brought to the area. We are planning to hook up to these utilities with the donations from concert ticket sales. Pray for us as we seek a way to build the classroom/office structure and two greenhouses. Also pray for us as we seek to apply for 501C non-profit status so that we can write for grants for these larger items.

If you would like to pledge funds to the Harvest Grove Community Center, please contact Jayne Hayes at the following email jayneGAV@gmail.com or call at 626-643-0331. If you do not feel moved to donate at this time, that is fine. We also can use your encouragement, and your prayers. Asante Sana! (Thank you!)

"May the God of peace... equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."
