   In Kenya

Laptops and Portable Solar Panel Arrive
In June, David traveled to Kipkaren to meet his brother William. William and his wife Michelle, recently visited the United States. When they returned to Kenya, they carried two laptops and a portable solar panel with them that had been donated to Harvest Grove community Center. The portable solar panel will charge cell phones and laptops. Because it is low wattage, it takes six to eight hours to fully charge the laptop, but is functional and will save traveling to Eldoret for charging these devices. We are hoping to raise enough funds from ticket sales to the Concert Under the Stars to purchase a set of higher wattage solar panels for the community center roof that will power lights, computers, sewing machines and other items on our wish list.

Non-Profit Status
In April, David was invited to attend one of a series of workshops sponsored by the NGOs Coordination Board and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). David traveled to Nairobi to attend a day-long tax workshop to learn how to submit forms for the NGO status that we have applied for. This workshop covered basics on how to file annual returns as well as how to deduct income taxes for employees. David was able to discuss questions regarding compliance with the Kenya Revenue Authority since we have no paid employees and must still file annual returns. Funds from Harvest Grove Project only funds projects. Any recurring expenses are fielded by the community center's budget. David is the director of Harvest Grove Community center but is does not receive financial compensation.

Opportunity to Expand our Territory
An opportunity to purchase land adjacent to the Harvest Grove property has presented itself. The gentleman who sold us the two-acre parcel we purchased in 2006 is planning to sell another four acres which would increase our property to six acres. There are plenty of mature trees (800+) already growing on the land. It is well fenced and there is a semi-permanent house. David and I are considering this expansion. Please pray for guidance from the Lord. Land is a valuable resource in this rural area and this opportunity may not be available in the future.

Property adjacent to Harvest Grove. The first photo (top left) is taken through the fence from the Harvest Grove property. This land would be excellent for planting small groves of fruitbearing trees.

Wish List/Prayer Requests In Kenya - Our application for a 501C non-profit status is still being processed... in 'Africa time'. Pray for it's completion so that we can apply for grants. We are planning to purchase solar panels with the donations from concert ticket sales this year. The panels will be capable of operating a few computers, sewing machine(s) and lights. It will also be a resource to charge cell phones without having to travel to Eldoret. Please pray for guidance for us regarding the purchase of more property.

If you would like to pledge funds to the Harvest Grove Community Center, please contact Jayne Sjodin at the following email jayneGAV@gmail.com or call at 626-643-0331. You can also send donations to Cornerstone Church in Glendora and specify that the funds are for the Harvest Grove Project .If you do not feel moved to donate at this time, that is fine. We also can use your encouragement, and your prayers. Asante Sana! (Thank you!)
