Harvest Time at Harvest Grove
Preparing Sorghum
Purity and the children prepare sorghum to make porridge. The tree behind them is a Cypress tree... one of the first trees we planted at Harvest Grove.

Sorghum and Millet
David writes, "...most of the farmers wanted to learn more about sorghum and millet." So both were planted in the demonstration area and are now ready for harvest.

Sorghum (pronounced "sore-gum") is a grain and should not be confused with sourgum which is a tree. This grain originated in Africa and is often cooked as a porridge. The grain is neutral in flavor, although some varieties are slightly sweet. It absorbs other flavors well but is still often eaten plain. Some sorghum is grown for the sweet syrup that is extracted from the stalks.

Sorghum is very high in fiber and iron, with a fairly high protein level as well. Maybe the nutritional benefits explains why it is believed that if a mother drinks sorghum porridge (igikoma) in sufficient quantity, she will produce abundant milk.

Millet
The sorghum grain is used to make a porridge. The stalks and leaves can also be used for fodder. Millet is growing in the demonsration area. It has a sweet nut-like flavor and is also highly nutritious.
Harvesting carrot seeds
Faith
Purity and David's daughters are harvesting carrot seeds from carrots planted in the demonstration area of the farm. Faith is growing almost as fast as the maize on the farm. Faith turned two years old last June. David's mother is doing well after her recent thyroid surgery.

Hybrid 627 Corn
The Hybrid corn pictured on the right is producing very well. David picks a few ears of corn to roast for dinner that evening after the family finish working on the farm. David writes, "I should say that Harvest Grove is enjoying the fruits of their hands."

The banana trees are producing fruit and David is planting avocado seeds in the research area. He is replacing plants that were destroyed during the outbreak of violence during the elections last December.

David cuts some maize
David's cuts a few ears of corn to roast for dinner later on.

Concert Under the Stars Fundraiser was a success
We sold 24 tickets to the Hafif Family Foundation Concert Under the Stars event this summer. This fundraiser earned over a thousand dollars, which was enough to pay the registration fees to Kenya Power (Ksh 40,000 = US$556.00)and to the Kenya Water Project (Ksh 20,000 = US$228.00), pay for materials required to bring the electricity and water onto the Harvest Grove property and we still had enough to pay the renewal fees for Community Based Organization status. We want to thank all of you who participated in the fundraiser and hope you had a great time at the concert.

Concert Under the Stars
Hafif Family Foundation estate had a packed arena for all five concert evenings.

Thanks for your prayers
David Kipkorir thanks those who prayed for his mother while she underwent treatment for her thyroid. She has recovered well from the surgery in Nairobi last July. David also is grateful that he was able to have a painful canine tooth pulled this month.

Field

What is this? The area of the Harvest Grove compound shown on the left is clear and waiting for the funds to build the lecture hall/office building and, God-willing, two greenhouses. The building will be a blessing as we will be able to store tools, create a library of resources and have shelter from rain for people who come to learn about organic farming, agricultural skills and nutrition. The community will also be able to use it as an entertainment facility and for Judeo Christian programs.

Harvest Grove is the manifestation of your prayers and support. Please accept our gratitude for your contributions.
